What are you currently working on?
TOO MANY THINGS!! My first uni module takes up the majority of my time. My concept is 'Growth' and theme is Allotments, Vegetable Patches & British Insects. I started it off by collaging (not just with paper but layering with Acetate also) and painting, then developing this slowly into print techniques such as paper and fabric Screen Print, Lino Print & Mono Printing. I am also going to try a bit of laser cutting this week which is potentially exciting (and potentially dangerous as it is a scary machine that could set on fire).
Also each month we get a new theme to design for Surtex (a trade fair in NY), this month is Florals and Geometrics, so we have this running a long side our main project.
AS WELL as a mini exhibition with uni called 'Priceless and Worthless', basically we have to find something cheap and a bit tatty and re-invent it somehow to make it 'priceless'... So I will keep you updated with how that goes!!
How did you get started in your "creative area"?
I first realised I liked art in general in year 9 when my teacher at school entered one of my pieces of work to a local art gallery competition and it got exhibited there! I didn't really think much of this at the time, but I guess this steered me into the direction of taking a BTEC in Art and Textiles at college (which was the best thing I could have done as I learnt so much on this!!) I specialised in Textiles within the second year, and just preferred print based textiles and the illustrative side of things naturally.
I then only realised that I quite like 'slow crafting' and collaging within my last project of first year (Coastal Wander) and found it to be quite a natural process for me and something that I enjoy doing! I really never would have guessed that I would be the slow crafting type as I don't tend to have much patience when it comes to things that take a while.
How do you think your journey differs from others?
Well lots of 'arty' people I know have 'arty' families, and my immediate family really aren't at all?! (Sorry Mum and Dad!) I still don't really understand where this side of me comes from but I don't mind as my family are really supportive in what I do and always help in whichever ways they can.
My mum has always been a great believer in doing what makes you happy and always wanting the best for me and my brother and if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be doing what I love everyday!
What is the most important thing you have learned through your journey so far?
That we are growing every day as creatives and when I look back even a year ago I have come so far and developed my own 'style' of working into something that I would never have thought of myself. We surprise ourselves all the time and we all need to have more of a 'can do' and WILL DO attitude!
Where do you hope your journey will take you?
I would like to see myself after university working within a design company to get the experience and knowledge and then eventually opening up my own business (in whatever that will be, maybe children's home ware, greetings, clothes who knows!). All I know right now is that I am happy in what I am doing and I just want to find a job that I want to go to every day and be HAPPY :-)
